Direct answer

What is a fire door?

A fire door is a tested doorset designed to protect an opening in a fire-resisting wall or barrier for a specified period when the door is closed.

The doorset includes more than the door leaf. Its performance depends on the tested combination of frame, hinges, closer, latch or lock, intumescent and smoke-control seals where specified, approved vision panel or glazing, fixings, clearances and the surrounding construction.

Fire doors support compartmentation, protect escape routes and help restrict the spread of fire and smoke. They are not a substitute for detection, alarm, suppression or safe means-of-egress design.

Important: A rating belongs to the tested assembly and configuration. Leaf material or thickness alone does not establish fire resistance.

Ratings and evidence

60, 90 and 120-minute fire doors

Projects commonly specify 60, 90 or 120-minute fire resistance; other classifications may apply. The correct rating is set by the approved fire and life-safety strategy, the barrier being protected, occupancy, opening location and the authority having jurisdiction.

Ask for evidence covering the actual doorset type, size, leaf configuration, insulation classification, latching condition, vision panel, hardware and intended supporting construction. A tested maximum size or configuration must not be casually extrapolated.

Selection rule: specify the approved opening first, then select documented doorset evidence that matches it. Do not choose solely from a generic minute rating.

Project workflow

From door schedule to handover

1

Review the schedule

Confirm opening reference, rating, size, handing, wall type, clear width, finish and access requirements.

2

Coordinate evidence

Match the proposed doorset, hardware, glazing and dimensions with tested and approved documentation.

3

Prepare openings

Verify dimensions, plumb, substrate, interfaces, threshold and service conflicts before installation.

4

Install the assembly

Fit, anchor, seal and adjust the frame, leaf, hardware and clearances to approved instructions.

5

Inspect and hand over

Record labels, operation, closing, latching, gaps, seals, hardware and approved documents.

Inspection checklist

What should be checked on a fire door?

Inspection frequency and acceptance criteria must follow the approved maintenance plan, applicable standard and local authority requirements.

Labels and identification are visible and legible. Leaf, frame, glazing and seals have no holes, breaks or damage. Hinges, closer, latch and other hardware are secure and compatible. The door closes fully from the open position and positively latches. Clearances remain within the approved assembly requirements. No wedges, cables, floor finishes or auxiliary items obstruct operation. Paired leaves close in the intended sequence where a coordinator is fitted. Automatic hold-open or power-operated functions release as designed.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers about fire doors

Final selection requires an approved door schedule, opening details and project fire strategy.

What does a 120-minute fire door mean?

It identifies a fire-resistance classification supported by the relevant test evidence for the complete assembly. The result applies only within the tested or formally assessed configuration and conditions.

Are smoke seals always required?

Smoke-control requirements depend on the door location, approved design, leakage classification and applicable rules. Use only seals compatible with the documented doorset.

Can hardware be changed after installation?

Not without checking compatibility and approval. Drilling, replacement locks, electromagnetic devices, signage or other field changes can affect the doorset evidence and operation.

Can fire doors have glass vision panels?

Yes, where the tested or assessed assembly permits the specified fire-rated glazing, aperture size, location, bead system and construction.

How should I request a quotation?

Share the door schedule, opening sizes, rating, wall construction, handing, leaf configuration, hardware set, finish, glazing, quantities, drawings and project location.

Does Vintex supply fire doors outside Maharashtra?

Yes. Enquiries are accepted across India, subject to specification review, quantity, tested configuration, project schedule, installation scope and logistics.
